Sustainable tourism in the Guinean context

In a country where tourism is underdeveloped and where governance is weak, it is not easy to try to develop sustainable tourism.

we, of BinobaiBissau have two fundamental priorities. On the one hand, we want to guarantee a certain and reliable stay to our clients; on the other hand, we want to respect the authenticity of the population and their environment. It is only under these conditions that tourism can have excess value to Guinea Bissau, both for the tourist and the population.

BinobaiBissau commits itself to making use, as much as possible, of locally available knowledge and infrastructure. The structure will be small-scale (groups of maximum 8 persons) because the area is so fragile. We expect that our guest treat both the people and their environment with respect.

BinobaiBissau will supply visitors with information concerning the area that will be visited and the rules and agreements that need to be followed. These agreements concern i.e. the distribution of pens, books and money but also the throwing away of litter and the making of pictures.

As an organisation we engage with people in villages or in projects. We really want to stand by the agreements we make in order to be able to build up a long lasting collaboration.

Although this may sound a bit heavy, in practice it is easy and logical. Some common sense and a bit of restraint will, without any doubt, lead to an unforgettable experience.
